Well, I think this dump was made just before John modernized the site. And after that modernization, it didn’t take very long before as far as I know before things just sort of stopped and John went to do other things. He’s all about climate stuff now.
I think this archive is pretty much all that there is nowadays.
I would like to advise you not to limit your choice of laptop simply by looking at whether it has a CD/DVD drive or not. For a small price you can get a separate CD/DVD player/writer that connects over USB, so that ‘limitation’ can be easily overcome. If you limit on this criteria you’re missing out on a lot of laptop choices for no really good reason. I mean, how often do you use CD’s anyways? during installation. Then never again, right?
Minimum cpu: intel core i3. i5 or i7 are better.
memory; if you’re lacking in memory, get an expansion. these are fairly cheap and easy to put in, i can even guide you through it myself. most come with 8gb nowadays anyways.
harddisk: always SSD, don’t get spinning rust, you’ll regret it. i’d personally want a minimum of 256gb in my laptop. if you can’t get a cheap one with 256gb ssd, then get a cheap one with a standard spinning rust harddisk and replace it with a separately purchased 256gb ssd you can buy elsewhere. Should cost around 120 ausd.Sounds to me like either your keyboard is fucked (shift key broken and continuously pressing down) or that you have MAYBE some ‘accessibility’ feature enabled (although I can’t think of any that does this and it frankly doesn’t make sense).

I fixed it. It turned out to be the captcha plugin. That damned thing randomly injected ads. It’s gone now.

While many such cleanup programs as the one suggested by a guy on deviantart (what a great source to quote… imagine writing a paper on computer security and quoting ‘a guy on deviantart’ as a source) do help in clearing up the trash such awful programs leave, it’s not a certainty that you’re clean. Best solution indeed is to nuke it.
Macs are different. Their security is different from Windows, much more limited. On Mac I would feel fine running ESET to clean up a minor malware infection. On Windows? Windows lets every piece of shit program in, and once it’s in, it can do anything you can (and more) on the computer. Hard to be sure it’s all fixed then. Total nuke and reinstall is only way to be reasonably sure it’s okay.
Re-image the laptop, then install ESET NOD32 Antivirus, a paid antivirus program. When asked enable the ‘block potentially unwanted programs’ option.
AVG has been going down the drain in the past year or so, it really sucks nowadays.
No words were ever used that equate to the meaning implied by the word ‘big’, so I have no idea where you got that from. But from my limited knowledge of astronomical phenomena, yes I do believe that a star is made up of a ball of gas. Usually a few due to fusion in the center.

Anyways, glad to see there are still some people around that drop in, even if very irregularly, just to keep in touch. We’re already more like 15 years on from when Sev was at its height, and maybe in another 15 years we’ll still drop in occasionally to keep in touch. It’s a small world.

I do still have a snapshot of Sev from like 2001 or so somewhere online. Perhaps I should put it online for nostalgia, but I dunno if John would be happy about it. I dunno, I never heard anything back from him when I asked about it. I see the site is down too, has been for a long time.
I guess I’ll just put the old thing back online, so we can at least still enjoy the comics. If John ever finds out and complains I’ll take it down.
Oh, I made you a keymaster or whatever in this new forum system so you can bug people and remove forum posts and stuff. The new smart captcha we have in place for user registrations should be enough to keep the spammers out, but you never know.
