Planning & Pencilling

I decided to base this first Sev Wars poster on Episode 4 and set it in Mos Eisley (the sev version is Most Eyesore). This setting allowed me to draw a big crowd scene quite naturally. If this poster proves popular, I'll bring out more Sev Wars posters based on the Empire Strikes Back (set in the ice world Hoth) and Return of the Jedi (this one will be set in the Endor forest and Ewok lovers may find it offensive :-)

I'm not big on planning, to be honest - I like to start drawing the real thing as soon as possible. But you know that saying, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail" so I force myself to at least work out the general layout of the poster. It has to have at least a bit of structure, otherwise it'll be confusing to the eye. Here is a scan of one of the initial pages where I mapped out the general layout of the poster.

To pencil the Sev Wars poster, I sticky taped two A3 pages together to make up an A2 sized page (hence the line down the middle of the scan). This scan is after two days of drawing (well, I worked an hour or two on the poster each day) and looking at it now, I'm surprised just how much parts of it changed from the initial pencilled to the final product.

Here is a scan of the final pencilled poster. It is far from the final product as I'll explain in later stages, but it gives you a fairly good idea of what the poster is like. When I got sick of pencilling, Wendy enlarged the pencilled version on a photocopier to A1 size so that I could trace all the bits and pieces at the proper size. This was the most interesting bit as many element changed substantially as I added more details in the tracing process. More on that in the next section.
