Sev Poll

Welcome to Sev Poll, where you can send feedback and comments to help shape the direction the Sev Wide Web takes in the future.

Poll on Sev database

I'm intending to convert all my comic strip archives into a database driven system and as a change, am planning it carefully (as opposed to my usual make it up as I go along policy). I thought I might outline what I was planning and see if any Sevilians might have some suggestions on what they'd like me to implement in this new comic strip archive system. Here's what I'm planning:

Yahoo Style Directory System

Firstly, the comic strips will be structured like Yahoo or other search engines which start off with links to general categories (such as Sev Trek or Sev Wars). You click on a category and get taken to a subpage. If the category is big enough like Sev Trek, then it'll have sub-categories such as X-Gen, Forager, etc. Click on a sub-category and you get taken to the list of comic strips themselves.

The idea of this system is it's much more organised and systematic and hence hopefully easier to find the cartoons you're looking for. Currently, I have the various archives all over the place in large, cumbersome lists.

Strips sorted by character

I want to sort comic strips by character or other criteria. For instance, say I have a character profile on Measly Cruncher. At the bottom of the page, I'd like a list of links to all comic strips that have Measly in them. I might do this for other things such as races (strips about Klingoffs, for instance) or themes (such as strips in outer space).

Related Strips

When you finally get to a page with a comic strip, a useful feature would be a handful of related links. This would probably be related by character. For example, a strip about Gainweight's hair would list other strips featuring Gainweight.

Breaking down other punchlines

Currently, every page with a comic strip also features a huge list of other punchlines submitted for that cartoon. A more efficient system would be to have a link from the comic strip page to a subpage containing all the other punchlines. Additionally, I would break up the subpage into a number of pages so that there aren't too many punchlines on a single page. It doesn't hurt that I get more page views this way too :-)

Search Engine

Probably one of the most powerful and useful features of a database system will be having a search engine. If you key in your favourite character, it will generate a list of all the strips that contain this character. I might also put other criteria to search for such as race, location, etc.

Poll Form
Kind of suggestions I'm looking for: the kind of things people would search for in a search engine, other ways of listing the strips or better ways to make the cartoons more accessible. Just anything you'd like me to have on my site!
