| Brainstorming Ideas

When beginning any project, I like to doodle as many ideas as possible. I followed this process for the Sev Wars poster as well. The research I had to perform for this poster was tough and intensive. It involved watching the trilogy several times (yes, it was tough but had to be done) and read a few books about Star Wars. The Star Wars Incredible Cross-Sections and Star Wars Visual Dictionary proved very useful as visual reference.

I usually being brainstorming ideas while I'm working on another project (the Sev Files book in this case). Whenever an idea popped into my head, I'd write it down (not really doing much doodling yet - just writing stuff down). This lasted over a couple of weeks. I've scanned in the first page I used to write ideas down on for you to check out.

How did I come up with cartoon ideas? Quite simply, by thinking about Star Wars. The more I thought about it, the more ideas would come (Wendy says this causes me to be a bit obsessive, which I readily confess is true). I'd get a lot of ideas while watching the trilogy. While reading any Star Wars related books, usually some obscure piece of information would spark of an idea. Here is a link to scans of doddles I've jotted down

However, most of the best ideas occur when I'm washing the dishes or doing some other mindless chore. I think it's because the mindless aspect of the job allows my brain to roam free, imagining weird and wonderful things while I scrape burnt sauce of the frying pan. Wendy thinks this means I should always do the washing up, for the sake of the cartoons, although I suspect she has an alterior motive. Here is a third scan of poster ideas to go in the poster. Sorry it's a little crumpled - I actually doodled them on the back of a scrap of paper I found on the car floor while waiting to pick Wendy up from work.
