| Caricaturing Star Wars

The Sev Wars poster was a huge task, not only because it was twice as big as the Sev Trek Poster but also because I had to learn to "sevilise" all the characters in it. At least I had worked out most of the Sev Trek characters.

There is probably some systematic method most cartoonists use when drawing caricatures. Unfortunately, I never learnt any methods and I develop a caricature by drawing a character over and over again until I'm happy with how they look. Usually I try to emphasise any distinguishing features (and slip a sev logo in wherever I can). I've included a few samples of my sketches when trying to caricature someone. Click on the picture to view a scan of the whole sketch.

Drawing Ham Slowmo is the classic example of caricaturing - just playing around with different styles until I get something that captures what he looks like. In this case, it was mostly a matter of getting that 70's hairstyle right.

Chewbacca was a fairly easy caricature - how hard can it be to draw a hairball with eyes? I seem to remember the Simpsons having Chewbacca in their X-Files episode - I'll have to check that out one of these days to see how they did it.

It's not hard to guess the distinguishable feature of Princess Leia - hair buns that would make Captain Janeway tremble! View my sketches and you'll see that it is the buns that I concentrated on, experimenting with different styles.

The Stormbloopers are one of my favourite characters to sevilise. Their uniforms always seemed to me to be bits of plastic all stuck together so I drew the uniform as a rickety collection of bits and pieces hanging of the Stormblooper. I particularly like the look of the exposed belly and this led to the idea of the female Stormblooper who makes an appearance on the Sev Wars poster.

The Spam People were another race I enjoyed caricaturing. I tossed around either a food theme or a nerd theme and decided the food theme had more potential (and plays a big part in the poster competition). However, I did like the look of the nerd Spam Person and he makes a cameo in the poster also.

Sevilising R2D2 was one of the hardest to do, simply because there was so much I could do with him. I played around with a lot of different ideas before picking something I liked - the Automatic Teller Machine idea.
